Hi, I’m Mr.Austin, Tip-Top Brains Lead High School Science and Math Instructor. I’m currently pursuing my PhD in Physics at the City College of New York, where my research focuses on biophysics and fruit genetics. I have been around Astoria for the last three years, and working at Tip-Top brain has really made me feel a connection to the community here. I feel good knowing I can push myself as an educator and also help students tackle challenging subjects.
I first discovered my love for teaching as a TA in college physics courses, and I quickly realized how much I enjoyed making science approachable. Especially because science is a very cool and interesting subject, so it would be a shame for students to not give it a chance because they are afraid to fail. Physics especially explains so many interesting things like the way things move, wind, nature, space, and just about everything else .Physics can feel intimidating, but I strive to show students the “why” behind the math, connecting lessons to real-world applications that make the subject click. Once students realize they can grasp the elementary concepts, they can use those to solve more complicated problems.
Outside of the classroom, I love trying new restaurants (thankfully New York has no shortage of those), snowboarding in the winter, cooking, and spending time with friends and family. Something I have become very passionate about is traveling. It has helped expose me to new cultures and I have met so many amazing people. A goal of mine is to visit all of the continents before I turn 30. My favorite experience while traveling was a 3 day road trip of the Ha Giang Loop in Northern Vietnam. We stayed in local villages and saw the most breathtaking scenery. It was the first time since I was a child that I felt such an intense sense of adventure. I was so thankful to get to experience something like that. Finally, my biggest inspiration is my mother, whose hard work motivates me to give my best every day. She was the best role model for me, and now is one of my very best friends. I have no doubt that relationship has made me the person I am today.
