Hello! My name is Mr. Matthew, and I’m currently serving as a Lead K-8 ELA, Math, and Homework Help Instructor here at Tip-Top Brain. I’m originally from Valley Stream, NY, but I’ve called Queens home for the past 10 years. I come from a family of educators—my mom has led an inclusion program for over 30 years, and my dad has served as principal of PS 88 Seneca School in Ridgewood. Their dedication to education has instilled in me a lifelong passion for teaching, which I’ve carried into my own career.
I hold over a decade of experience with the NYC Department of Education, including seven years as a teaching assistant and five as a lead teacher. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences/Ecology from SUNY Cortland in 2015, followed by a dual master’s in Education and Special Education with a focus on behavior disorders from Hunter College. I began my teaching career at PS 9 in District 75, working with students with complex learning needs. One of my proudest accomplishments has been helping students transition from self-contained settings back to their community schools through individualized, data-driven instruction. Witnessing their growth and renewed confidence continues to be the most rewarding part of my work.
In my current role, I implement evidence-based programs such as Heggerty and Fundations for literacy, along with NYC’s Envision Math curriculum. Teaching in specialized settings has sharpened my ability to differentiate instruction and meet diverse learning styles. Beyond academics, I strive to create a nurturing, respectful classroom where students learn not only academic content but also the communication and empathy skills they’ll carry through life.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy exploring the outdoors through hiking, biking, and swimming. I’ve visited over 35 states and countless national parks, fueling my love for adventure. I also have a background in athletics, earning honors in wrestling and track and field—strengthening both body and mind has been central to my personal and professional success. I recently fostered and adopted an 8 – month old Chihuahua named Spud who has become a loving part of my family along with my three cats, Ashes, Poe, and Raven.
Above all, I believe building positive relationships with students is the foundation for academic and personal growth. When students feel safe, respected, and supported, they are more willing to take risks, engage with learning, and develop confidence in themselves. These connections spark curiosity, build resilience, and foster a lifelong love of learning that empowers students far beyond the classroom.
I really love the sense of community we’ve built at Tip-Top Brain. It’s a place where I get to help students grow and learn every day, which is so rewarding. I’m especially thankful for the parents who partner with us through their professionalism and communication—and they can always expect the same from me. When we keep an open, honest dialogue, it creates a strong support system that directly benefits the students. That teamwork truly makes the difference, helping kids thrive and reach their full potential.
