Hello! My name is Ms. Mabel and I am one of the Lead K-2 Instructors at Tip-Top Brain. I am originally from Queens, NY, have lived in Orlando, FL for the past 5 years, and now I am back in New York! When I came to the United States from the Dominican Republic at six years old, I vividly remember how helpful, nurturing, and insightful my first grade teacher was. I remember her patience, empathy and guidance throughout my progress in learning English as a second language. This is where my passion to become a teacher blossomed, as I hoped to instill respect, responsibility, and resilience in my own students.
I graduated from CUNY Queens College in 2019 with a major in Early Elementary Childhood Education and a minor in Sociology. I immediately accepted my first role as a kindergarten teacher shortly after graduation. Since then, I have been teaching primary grades which is where my true passion lies.
Teaching children how to read has been incredibly rewarding because I get to witness their progress first-hand while making an impact on their academics. I have been able to increase the motivation of reluctant readers and celebrate their achievements. I am trained in the Fundations phonics program, Heggerty phonological awareness program, as well as training in multi-sensory learning. Through evidence-based “Science-of-Reading” practices and methodologies, I have been able to help my students with low reading proficiency rates make improvements by teaching structured literacy lessons in a systematic and explicit way.
In all my years of teaching, I’ve delivered creative lessons which were engaging for students and provided them with the opportunity for collaboration to instill communication, critical thinking and creativity. I have met the needs of students with varying abilities, strengths, and struggles. I have differentiated my instruction to provide multiple entry points and provided accommodations to students with special needs according to their IEPs or 504 Plans. I am a strong advocate for fostering a class community in which children can celebrate their differences by showing respect, dignity and equality.
When I’m outside of the classroom, I enjoy painting, visiting museums, visiting amusement parks and spending time with my family. I love traveling somewhere tropical at least once a year. This is where I get to try exciting excursions that ignite my inner adrenaline junkie! I’ve been ziplining, rock climbing, cliff jumping, snorkeling, ATV riding, jet skiing, and completed fun challenge courses – both tree-top and on the water!
As an educator, my ultimate goals are to always put my students first, their educational needs and always taking into consideration their safety. Being an instructor at Tip-Top Brain, I strive to set up your child for academic success. I provide students with high quality instruction that will allow them to flourish and reach new potentials!
